Dr. Lutz van Dijk, Citizen of the Year – 2014

Citizen of the year, Dr. Lutz van Dijk

Our District 410A, honoured Dr. Lutz van Dijk of HOKISA with a Citizen of the Year award. This achievement recognition, in the form of a Melvin Jones Fellowship was presented to Dr van Dijk by our District Governor Moira Theron at her Welcome Home Breakfast Gala.

A little history on Dr. Lutz van Dijk

“…is a German-Dutch writer, born in Berlin in 1955. He began as a teacher in Hamburg (Germany), later he joined the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam (Netherlands). Since 2001 he is at home in Cape Town (South Africa), where he became a founding member and Co-Director of HOKISA, a South African NGO which cares for children affected and/or infected by HIV/AIDS.

Most of his books are written in German and translated into many other languages (like Afrikaans, Bulgarian, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, French, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Swedish, isiXhosa – and English). Lutz van Dijk has received several literary awards, among them the Namibian Youth Literature Award (1997) and the German Gustav-Heinemann-Peace-Award (2001).

Next to Germany and Holland, where he is on reading tours twice a year, he has given readings in schools, libraries, bookshops and with human rights groups in Austria, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, England, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain and outside of Europe in countries in Western and Southern Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and the USA.“

Dr. Lutz has a PhD; he is a qualified teacher for special education of disturbed children; writer (free-lance); volunteer fundraiser and coordinator of Amakhaya Ngoku housing project in Masiphumelele.

His most recent books are set in South Africa and his work includes a “History of Africa” with a foreword by Archbishop EM. Desmond tutu. All royalties from his South African books are donated to the Hokisa home, and form a major financial support for this project.

Dr. Lutz van Dijk, HOKISA

Characteristically, Dr Lutz van Dijk’s main concern is developmental, and his focus at all times is on those who have been marginalized, helping them to discover their abilities and nurturing them to grow into their full potential as human beings.

DG Moira Theron gave such an insightful introduction of Dr Lutz van Dijk and everyone present was overwhelmed with what he has achieved over the years. We are proud to have honoured one of many of South Africa’s unsung heroes.

In Memoriam Lion Izzy Wolman

Lion Izzy Wolman

Born in 1924, Israel Selig “Izzy” Wolman was a man amongst men with a dry sense of humour and a talent for public speaking. His attention to detail was legendary and his constant references to the *Three P’s and Five B’s helped many members.
*(PPP- Prepare Pal Prepare and BBBBB – Be Brief Brother Be Brief – both fundamental guidelines in public speaking). He served as a member of Lions Clubs International, starting as a Charter member of the Rondebosch Club in 1960, serving as Club President in 1967-68. He was Zone Chairperson in 1970-71 and was elected District Governor in 1973-74, and then Chairperson of the Council of Governors in 1990-91.

He played a pivotal role as member and Chairperson of the Constitutions and Resolutions committee at both District and Multiple District level between 1984 and 2000.
With the closure of Rondebosch in 2001, he moved to Kirstenbosch.

His fifty four years of Humanitarian Community Service impacted on many lives and created many heart-warming and often amusing memories for all who knew him.

In Rondebosch, he was the convenor of the then longest running club service project through his involvement with LOFOB (League of Friends of the Blind).

He was the “gentleman Lion” whose great sense of humour included the often rare ability to laugh at himself. He was a much respected member and his fellow Lions have much to be grateful for in having served with him. He enriched their lives with his knowledge, wit and willingness to have fun.

Honoured at all levels of the Association, he was a Life Member and Melvin Jones Fellow. However, his community involvement stretched far beyond being a Lion as he was a Freemason, member of Toastmasters and a prominent and well respected member of the Claremont Hebrew Congregation. His extensive involvement in South Africa and International religious matters earned him many accolades.

Throughout his life, he was ably supported by his Lions Lady Sylvia, who predeceased him.

THE LIONS CREED
A person achieves success, who lives well,
Laughs often and loves much,
Who gains the respect of intelligent people
And the love of little children.
Who fills a niche and accomplishes his or her task,
Who leaves the world better than he or she found it,
Whether by a brighter flower,
A perfect poem, or a rescued soul.
Who always sees the best in others
And gives the best he or she has,
Whose life is an inspiration,
Whose memory is a benediction,

THAT PERSON IS A LION
